Understanding Your DNA Test Results
Your results will include two numbers (alleles) for each STR, representing the repeats inherited from each parent. These alleles may be identical or different at each marker. By comparing these numbers between the tested individuals, a statistical analysis determines the likelihood of a biological sibling relationship.
- Full siblings (same mother and father) typically have a full sibling index greater than 1.0.
- Half siblings (one parent in common) typically have a half sibling index greater than 1.0.
- The higher the index value above 1.0, the stronger the likelihood of a sibling relationship.
- Individuals who are not siblings usually have an index value below 1.0.
